Adventures With Joe

When I come to Atlanta I am usually pressed for time. I usually have one day to do everything I’m supposed to do so I try to do too much. I had to keep reminding myself today that I’ll be here until Sunday, plenty of time to do everything I want.

Last night, as is the custom, I caught up with the homie Nile for a few drinks at the local Ruby Tuesday. We caught up on old times, it was all good.

Today was a full day for real. I left the house with Nina as she went to her very last day of class in the AUC. I had full intentions on getting a haircut, but they had closed BOTH barbershops on Ashby street! So instead I decided I’d walk up the campus and hopefully run into one of the few people I knew still in school.

On a whim I called the homie Kasi for my boy Joe from Dallas’ number. I called Joe and discovered that he had just left his only class for the day and was headed to the parking deck. If I had called him not even 3 minutes later I wouldn’t have caught up with him.

Turns out that he had a pretty light day as it goes for a local celebrity of his status, so I ended up rolling out with him. We headed to his girlfriend Joy’s apartment out in AUC East (my AUC folks know that means out I-20 East).

On the way there something happened that pretty much sums Joe up. As we exited the freeway he noticed a “Crunk Truck” that distributes Crunk Energy Drink. He gets the attention of the dudes in the truck and gets them to roll down their window. He then yells in, “Are ya’ll giving out Crunk?” They signal that they will pull into the gas station up ahead. When they stop, Joe gets out and tells them how he was a student studying for finals and he stayed up all night the previous night with the help of Crunk. They were so impressed they gave him a whole case. Things like this just happen with Joe on the regular.

We went to Joy’s and watched A Different World. Actually, we had a round table debate about it, to be really accurate. As a matter of fact, if things turn out the way I want, something very well may come out of that debate. Time will tell.

At any rate, we left and headed toward one of my favorite restuarants here in Atlanta, La Fonda Latina! I had the Quesadilla Con Chorizo and I took some poor quality pictures before we headed to the AUC.

As I headed onto the campus we began to see all sorts of friends, new and old. We came to the conclusion that Morehouse always has the same students, when one unique guy leaves another comes and takes his spot in that particular niche. I also concluded that the AUC is the most wonderful place in the world. After talking with Smitty, Calloway, Marcus, Christopher, Dawud, Lodi, George, and countless others I made my way to find my mentor Dean Darden. Unfortunately he was in a meeting across campus, but I ended up just chilling in the building his office was located in, they’ve placed alot of historical Morehouse memorablia and pictures in the main lobby area where students go to study.

After awhile Che showed up and we went to meet Nina at her “Morehouse class” taught by my dad’s friend Dr. White. My godsister also takes that class and I got to see her and talk to her for awhile. She is excited about coming up to Vanderbilt for Law School in a few months. Dr. White was late, and Che had another engagement so I left with her.

I sat in with Che in the Math office as she tutored a young lady taking some type of super advanced International Baccalaureate Math class in high school. I also met several of Che’s co-workers. Che then had a meeting to attend for one of her MANY clubs.

When all of that was over we hooked back up with Nina and headed to Gutbusters. They were out of the pizza sauce for pizza steaks, so I was slightly disappointed, and they also changed the cheese sauce for the fries. That might have been the only real down part of the day.

Tomorrow is probably going to be full as well, as it’s Che’s 20th birthday. I’m glad I’m home to be a part of it.

Man, I needed to read this today. I had one of the roughest finals situations in my life and all that was comfort to me was the thought of the AUC. No lie. A nigga was near tears, I swear law school seems to want ownership over my pride and perseverance. I’m still fighting back though, I’m still Caishe…

    Calvin,

As you know, you’re one of those guys have come to know a great deal about in a number of capacities but never really like that. I’m glad an elder statesman friend directed me here. I couldn’t see the pictures but words are worth more and I’ll be tuning in. Man I might even track the resources down and get one of these going. Anyway, keep doing what you do man and I hope to see you soon Coldplay style. It goes on…
