Quintessential Childhod Event: The HBO Summer

First things first I have to give a shout out to the beautiful Miss Akirah. There’s a Donnell Jones song playing somewhere for you….

Now on to the entry….

So I was sitting at Chili’s yesterday with Geoff, shooting the shit, when we started talking about our respective childhoods. Geoff mentioned one summer where he was “too old to have a babysitter” and “too young to go out and do anything else” and mentioned that it was the summer where he really discovered/watched a bunch of HBO. I realized I had a summer like that myself. Mine was probably the same as my sisters now that I think of it.

Then I started thinking, just about everyone at one point or another from my generation probably had an “HBO Summer”, like before there were 20 HBO channels on digital cable, back when cable was sort of a novelty, and HBO even more so. Back before DVD’s made movies READILY available.

*I just had to take a quick break….one day soon I’ll make an entry and tell ya’ll why*

My HBO summer was the summer of 1987 when my parents were getting divorced and we stayed in Mississippi with my grandparents. It seems like the movies that summer were the BEST ever, or maybe it’s because I watched them so much.

Movies like, “The Legend of Billy Jean” and “Lucus” would come on everyday and I’d watch them just about everyday. This was the summer I discovered “Big Trouble In Little China” also. I watched way more “Howard the Duck” than I should admit. I also watched, “Weird Science” more often than a kid my age should have. “Karate Kid Part II” got watched so much, me and my sisters learned just about ALL of the dialogue. Sometimes I was able to sneak all the way up to Showtime and watch “Friday the 13th part 6″, but that was the only movie worth watching on there. I also discovered….SKINAMAX, but I can’t remember the names of any of the movies other than “Cheech and Chong’s Nice Dreams”, whose Pee Wee Herman appearance confused me!

Anyway I watched WAY too many movies that summer. I never had a summer like that again where I watched that many movies. So what was your “HBO Summer”? What movies did you love?

How did I miss this post?? Anyway… you brought back hella memories, man.

Howard… the duck! LOL I used to sing the hell out of that movie’s theme song.

I know the dialogue to Karate Kid I & II as well. I’m so bad no one will even watch them with me.

The Legend of Billie Jean… another movie that ROCKED in the 80’s :). That Pat Benatar song… Oh.my.God… another tune I’d sing super loud. LOL

Cinemax ran all those Emmanuel semi-flicks.
