Summer With C. Miles (1992)

Okay, back to where I left off….

In 1992 I had just finished 7th grade….it was probably my worst year “socially”….I was getting bullied at school by old boy Robert (I wrote about this awhile back)….I was a CLASSIC nerd….skinny, glasses, low self esteem (yep lower than now!!)….anyway I was in need of some direction or something….all I had was my Super Nintendo and a couple friends who were true (Nile had my back most of the time although sometimes he’d be the worst one clowning me….better me than him I guess)….

I don’t know exactly how it all came to be, I just sort of ended up packing all of my stuff and staying with my dad all of a sudden….I remember that Street Fighter II as BRAND NEW that summer and my dad used to take me to the arcade to play it….Dad loved Blanka….he liked the way he walked….well we spent countless hours playing against each other that summer….

At the time dad was just starting to become “locally famous” for his radio talk show….so more often than not I would go up to the radio station with him and learn the ins and outs…..sometimes his producer Liz would let me answer the phones and screen the calls….he already had a list of “banned callers” from his show, people that called up with some racist shit or were just plain ignorant….people would trip out when they found out that it was his son answering the phones….sometimes I would even get on the air (I took that for granted)….other times I chilled in the sports office reading old sports almanacs and media guides….they would give me the older copies sometimes….then other times I would chill in the newsroom and read news as it would come off of the AP wire….most of the people that worked there were really nice to me (and my sisters when they’d come)….

That summer dad’s station also got the rights to carry the Braves games (they already had the Hawks) so I had de facto season tickets….my dad would go out and make public appearances at the games and then if we felt like it we’d go watch the game (something else i took for granted)….the previous summer we actually went to more games and I actually met Ted Turner once because my dad knew his personal usher (this dude named Walter)….1992 was the year that the Braves lost to the Blue Jays in the World Series….my favorite player then was Ron Gant and I also liked Deion Sanders alot….he was extra flashy….

Most days were spent chilling though, because dad’s show was from 7-10 at that time (he also had the 10PM-2AM shift for a while)….his place was on a lake, so more often than not he could be found down there fishing….I remember I battled with a bass one day for about 2 hours…he kept spitting out my bait pissing me off!….

One day we came down to the lake and ALL of the chairs were thrown in!…..turns out these kids I used to play with had a delinquent cousin, Osirus, in town and he threw them in….Dad used to trip us out telling us how the little girl Naimah told on old boy….she had a raspy voice and according to my dad she said, “I tried to stop em” (Che and Nina are probably the only people that will get that…oh well…I put that in the story for them!)….

Then there was the one day when my dad and I got into a fight….he provoked me…..turned off the Super Nintendo….then pushed me or something….we ended up fighting for about 30-40 minutes…..don’t worry readers…we didn’t punch each other in the face and try to kill each other….we just wrestled and such….it was actually kind of great in hindsight….we had never had even a disagreement prior to that point….and we haven’t since….

Somehow just like how the summer started, it ended….nothing official….I just got my stuff and moved back into my mom’s house….but to this day that summer was the best ever….if I could go back to any summer I would go back to 1992….

That was a good story…Osirus was the devil! I probably wouldn’t have effed with him.

Dude SFII was the ultimate shit, and STILL is. I remember first playing it hardcore at Roy Williams basketball camp at KU. Me and this one white kid (can’t remember his name), used to go AT it. I was Guile and he would be Ryu. Everyone would crowd around us cause we were the only two in the camp who could beat one another. I spent so much money on that damn machine I swear. Good times then. Simpler days you know?

It’s weird, for some reason, all my odd years were horrible, and all my even years have been great. Didn’t turn around until I entered graduate school in 1999 at meharry and then the medical school in 2001 as a freshman. Anyhow, that’s neither here nor there. Nice story :)
